Emanuel Kuntzelman: That, but it was. Anyway, four or five days later, riding trains, taking ferries, boats to Barcelona, to Mallorca, to Ibiza, and I finally get on this little tub, get over to Formentera. It's the middle of the winter, 1973. Few people get off the boat, I'm sitting there in the port of Formentera, didn't speak a word of Spanish, didn't know where I was, hadn't slept in five days.
I walked a few feet, and I thought. What on earth am I going to do? I don't know where I am, what I'm doing. The only thing I know for sure is I am really tired.
I am exhausted. So I propped my backpack up against the wall. I'm sitting there kind of in a half sleep, and there were hardly any cars. I mean, I think Formentera at that time had ten cars on the entire island.
All of a sudden, a little car, a Fiat 500, pulls to a stop right in front of where I am. I look up. This woman rolls down the window, and she goes, in this beautiful British accent, "Oh my gosh, I have never seen anyone looking like a woe-begone hippie suffering from an overdose of wanderlust. If you are the epitome of that, that's disgusting sort of thing." I kind of rubbed my eyes and said, "Beg your pardon, really, what?" And she kind of repeated the whole thing.
And I said, "Well, okay, I guess so. Sorry, I haven't probably showered or tidied up for a few days, but actually, I'm here on quite serious business." And she said, "Oh, and what might that be?"
Paulette Pipe: Yes.
Emanuel Kuntzelman: And she said, and I said, "Well, I'm looking for the Hotel Casbah." And then her whole tone changed and she got very serious. "And why might we be looking for the Hotel Casbah?" she says. I said, well, I've been told that there's a gentleman named Roneman von Bissing who owns and operates the hotel, and he knew Gurdjieff and Uspensky back in the day, and is a big authority on it, and I'm very interested in that stuff. See, I've got the book right here.
And she pushes open the passenger door of the car and says, get in! Throw me back. I sit down and she goes. Hello, I'm Jackie van Bissing, Roneman's wife.
I shall take you to the Hotel Casbah.
Paulette Pipe: You're welcome.
Emanuel Kuntzelman: Oh, oh.
Paulette Pipe: You.
Emanuel Kuntzelman: Sometimes the universe makes things so easy for us that if you're on that quest for truth, and you're willing to say it here and there. I kind of felt like I had the red carpet thrown out to a wandering hippie suffering from an overdose of wanderlust. And I end up spending quite a few years off and on. I managed the hotel for the Van Bissings.
Paulette Pipe: Wow.
Emanuel Kuntzelman: Years of great knowledge about. Von Bissing had joined the Gurdjieff group originally, back about 1930, and when Gurdjieff and Ouspensky split up, von Bissing went with Ouspensky and kind of became his right-hand person, and knew all the main players in the field of the Gurdjieffian work at that time, and that was kind of the real start on my endeavors of understanding the Law of Seven, the flow of waves, what it all meant. Aside from that, spending some nice time on the island of Formentera as well.
