Jin-Chuan Shi and Jin-Wei Shi's Talk on Devotion!

Marilyn Dunn, Apr 24, 2021 in Devotion and Purpose

What a privilege to glean insights on devotion (and non-devotion :)) with Jin-Chuan Shi and Jin-Wei Shi of the Berkeley Buddhist Monastery, where Rev Heng Sure (whose bowing pilgrimage we read about on Day 4!) is the abbot.

Here's their talk from our closing call:

And a couple tidbits from the chat window:

Video of Jin-Wei Shi's ceremony to become a monk, with a touching cameo appearance of his mother.

Quote from J. D. Salinger's classic novel, Catcher in the Rye: "The mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one."

From stories of devotion to basketball as a child to bowing as if in the "Dharma Navy Seals" to back injuries to relationships with our parents, holding the world with gentleness, and a stirring chant of loving-kindness, their humorous and down-to-earth presence deeply inspired us!

The beautiful chant that so inspires us:

May you be safe and protected from inner and outer harm.
May you be truly happy and deeply peaceful.
May you be healthy and strong and physically at ease.
May you take care of yourself and live with well-being.

(Oh, and if of interest, a pod in June that they will be hosting: Noble Friendships :))
